ASIA-PACIFIC LADIES FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY of Japan (ALFS)

This organization was founded 39 years ago by Mutsuko Miki, widow of former Prime Minister Takeo Miki.   From its inception, the society aimed to strengthen understanding and friendship among women of the Asia-Pacific region.  Today, ALFS counts 24 member countries and a general membership that approaches 300.  It maintains a welfare fund for regular donations to institutions in each member country and an emergency relief fund earmarked for natural disaster victims.

Recently, ALFS of Japan holds an annual Charity Bazaar, the proceeds of which were shared between the participating countries and Singapore is a participating country.  Mrs Maureen Tan, wife of the Ambassador of Singapore to Japan, is the chairwoman of this year’s Asia-Pacific Festival and Charity Bazaar.  Through Mrs Tan, ALFS of Japan has generously donated to VIVA Foundation in two separate occasions.

It was our great honour to received Mrs Haruko Koumura, ALFS President since 2006 and Mrs Kiyoto Fukuda, the Vice-President, and together with the wife of Ambassador of Japan, Mrs Yamanaka, who recently visited VIVA’s on-going project--- the establishment of its children’s cancer centre in Ward 88 at NUH. VIVA Foundation warmly welcomed and thanked them for their time to visit the centre and its patients.

NUH’s Dr Tyroone Goh and his team and Dr Allen Yeoh, greatly contributed to the success of the visit.  VIVA Foundation expressed its appreciation to them.
